Professors Aaron Ames, Anima Anandkumar, H. Jane Bae (BS ’11), Kaushik Bhattacharya, Tim Colonius, Tapio Schneider, and Andrew Stuart are on project teams that have received an award from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Multidisciplinary University Initiative (MURI) Program.
Since its creation in 1985, the MURI program has funded teams of investigators from multiple disciplines to “facilitate the growth of cutting-edge technologies.” The 2023 MURI awards total $220 million and support 31 teams located across 61 U.S. academic institutions.
Kaushik Bhattacharya, Howell N. Tyson, Sr., Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science; Vice Provost, is the principal investigator on the project titled “Data‐Driven Closure Models and Constitutive Relations: The Development of Principled Methodologies for Complex Multi‐Physics Applications.” Caltech faculty working alongside Bhattacharya on this project include: Anima Anandkumar, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences; Tim Colonius, Frank and Ora Lee Marble Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Medical Engineering; Cecil and Sally Drinkward Leadership Chair, Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering; Executive Officer for Mechanical and Civil Engineering; Tapio Schneider, Theodore Y. Wu Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering; Jet Propulsion Laboratory Senior Research Scientist; and Andrew Stuart, Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
Aaron Ames, Bren Professor of Mechanical and Civil Engineering and Control and Dynamical Systems, is on the team for the project titled “HyDDRA: Hybrid Dynamics - Deconstruction and Aggregation."
H. Jane Bae, Assistant Professor of Aerospace, is on the team for the project titled “Fluid‐Metamaterial‐Interaction to Revolutionize Passive Control of Aerodynamic Flows.”
