Alireza Marandi Named a Sloan Fellow

Alireza Marandi, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, has been awarded a 2023 Sloan Research Fellowships. Awarded annually since 1955 by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the fellowships "honor extraordinary U.S. and Canadian researchers whose creativity, innovation, and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders," according to the foundation's announcement. A total of 156 Caltech researchers have received the awards to date. [Caltech story]

Mohammad Mirhosseini Receives NSF CAREER Award

Mohammad Mirhosseini, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, has received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program offers the NSF's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Mirhosseini receives the award for his proposal titled "Quantum silicon phononics: Harnessing long-lived phonons for memories and interconnects."

Three Caltech EAS Grad Students and One EAS Alumna Named Quad Fellows

Riku Fukumori, PhD candidate in Applied Physics, Gordon Li, PhD candidate in Applied Physics, Ryoto Sekine, PhD candidate in electrical engineering, and Kavya Sreedhar (BS '19, Electrical Engineering), have been named to the inaugural class of the Quad Fellowship, an initiative of the governments of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States to advance scientific and technological development, foster intercultural ties, and promote collective good. Mohammad Mirhosseini Receives 2023 AFOSR Young Investigator Research Program Award

Mohammad Mirhosseini, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, has received a 2023 YIP award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) for his project titled "Quantum Computing-Encoding Bosonic Quibits in Long-Lived Phonons."

Wei Gao Receives US National Academy of Medicine Catalyst Award

Wei Gao, Assistant Professor of Medical Engineering; Investigator, Heritage Medical Research Institute; Ronald and JoAnne Willens Scholar, has received the 2022 US National Academy of Medicine Catalyst Award in the Healthy Longevity Global Competition. The Global Competition is part of a larger initiative to fuel a worldwide movement to help improve physical, mental, and social well-being for people as they age, known as the Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge.

Professor John Sader Elected to the Australian Academy of Science

John Sader, Research Professor of Aerospace and Applied Physics, has been elected to the Australian Academy of Science. Sader developed pioneering measurement techniques that revolutionized the characterization of materials using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The Sader Method is an international standard for AFM calibration, as is the Sader-Jarvis Method for atomically resolved AFM measurements.

Kerry Vahala Receives MPQ Distinguished Scholar Award

Kerry Vahala, Ted and Ginger Jenkins Professor of Information Science and Technology and Applied Physics; Executive Officer for Applied Physics and Materials Science, receives the MPQ Distinguished Scholar award in recognition of his "pioneering scientific work in the field of nonlinear optics and photonics with microresonators." The award is presented to particularly outstanding scientists on the recommendation of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ) Board of Directors.

Minqiang Wang Receives Baxter Young Investigator Award

Minqiang Wang, Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate in Medical Engineering, working with Wei Gao, Assistant Professor of Medical Engineering; Investigator, Heritage Medical Research Institute; Ronald and JoAnne Willens Scholar, has received a first-tier Baxter Young Investigator Award for his work on wearable biosensors for precision nutrition. Baxter's Young Investigator Awards seek to stimulate and reward research applicable to the development of therapies and medical products that save and sustain patients' lives. [Past Winners]
